Love is in the Details

Story by Terri Glazer | Event Design by Alexandra Blanton Events | Photography by Annabella Charles

February is the month of love, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a table for two! A special dinner in a beautiful setting can celebrate family or friends we cherish. Event planner and designer Alexandra Blanton styled this enchanting tablescape with a Valentine’s family gathering, girls’ night or supper club in mind.

The Inspiration

A casual scroll through Instagram provided Blanton’s inspiration for this bold color palette. “I came across a powder room on Architectural Digest’s feed. It was in very deep reds and had a wallpaper that was a lot like the linen I ended up choosing. The walls had really deep, blood red tile along with the bottom half of the room. So I just took that color and the inspiration from that wallpaper and ran with it,” she says. “I decided to go with a jewel tone with a bit of a different twist.”

The Designer: Native Memphian Alexandra Blanton is a full-scale luxury wedding planner and event designer based in Denver, CO. She credits her 12 years of ballet training growing up for her love of beauty and design, and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics for her ability to plan and execute events efficiently.

The Setting

The glass chapel of the Florian at Mallard’s Croft in Byhalia, MS, provided a breathtaking setting. Soaring windows allowed natural light to bathe the table and provided a panoramic view of the surrounding forest, creating an intimate, fairy-tale feel.

The Table

Blanton began by draping her table for eight in a floor-length cloth. The Sangria Aviara cloth from Nuage Designs features an updated take on a traditional red toile print. Solid napkins in Valentine’s Red, also from Nuage, continue the romantic theme.

“I decided to balance all the deep colors with black as a neutral,” says Blanton. In addition to striking cross-back dining chairs, she brought ebony tones into the picture with dinner plates embellished with dark gray thistles set atop black melamine chargers. Simple silverware completed the place settings.

For the glassware, the designer kept with clear vessels, allowing other elements to take center stage. She paired a tall, linear wine glass from Target with a timeless, faceted coupe from Ikea to create interest.

The Flowers

Kristin Wolter of Everbloom Design created the stunning florals. “We took the colors from my mood board and turned them into an ombre floral runner,” Blanton recalls. “Kristin pulled in whites, pinks and purples and flowed it down the table. The table setting was pretty by itself, but when we added the florals it created this cozy, sweet vibe.”

Candles in tones to match the flowers provided the romantic icing on the cake. “Once you light the candles, it’s hard to beat this look. Candlelight softens everything and always creates a romantic feel,” says Blanton.

Get the Look

Flowers are the foundation for creating a similar look for your February event. The arrangement doesn’t have to span the entire length of the table as this one does, but a floral element always adds dimension and texture, according to Blanton. Next, add an interesting place setting. “It doesn’t have to be super special or expensive, but just mixing colors and patterns with the plate stack and using fun glassware makes it interesting. Use votives or taper candles to create dimension—to give your eye things to travel along.”

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, colors and textures, the designer suggests. Things don’t have to match to work well together. Blanton’s pro tip: pay attention to scale when mixing patterns. Too many small patterns together look busy, while only large-scale patterns become aggressive to the eye.

Brunch in Bloom

The Table

With spring in full swing, it seemed like a tablescape was long over due! This month's table was inspired by the blooms currently thriving at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens, as well as White Door Events newest table linens! Available in apple green, sky blue and dusty rose, White Door's newest Elif table cloth was such an easy pick for the table.

After choosing the linen, it was time to add texture to the table. Their new Dina lampshades are the cutest woven touch to any table! I love the texture they add! Another textural element was their new Elm chairs in a lovely natural finish. The curves on these chairs are so unique for any event.

And finally to top off the table, I paired simple white ceramic dishes with blue Estelle Colored Glass wine glasses and pale green Sir Madam tulip glasses. White hemstich napkins were held with a tortoise shell ring to add additional contrast to a lighter color palette.

The Spread

The Dixon Gallery & Gardens has such great places for picnics! Picking out the spread for the table was an easy task. I headed to Whole Foods to grab an assortment of cheeses, fruit, breads and more. There were so many guests having picnics of their own, it was the perfect day for such a simple yet fun meal.

A Warm Welcome

Event Design by Arden Sanders Events | Story by Terri Glazer | Photos by Dear Wesleyann Photography

Since guests were traveling from far and wide to attend their daughter Mary Margaret’s Rosemary Beach, FL, wedding to Davis Horton, Beth and David Skudder wanted to make sure family and friends were welcomed in style. They called on 30A wedding expert Arden Sanders and her team at Arden Sanders Events to make the welcome party a bright, colorful soiree that would set the tone for the weekend of celebrations to come.

The Setting

The family has owned a vacation home at Rosemary Beach for years, so bride Mary Margaret knew for a long time she wanted to be married there. Sanders says her goal was to showcase Rosemary’s various venues during the wedding weekend, starting with the welcome party at the charming Homeowners’ Pavilion. With the help of Myrtie Blue Event Design, Sanders and ASE lead planner Coleman Crye transformed the poolside area into a party paradise filled with color, pattern, flowers and fun.

The Theme

“Coastal chic” was the theme for the evening. The mother of the bride asked that the welcome dinner decor have a warm color palette to give it a look all its own, since the wedding was to be a formal affair with black, white and champagne tones. The ASE team ran with the bright, joyful look, punching up the pavilion with color everywhere. From the plethora of flowers to the festive patterned linens to the fun and funky furniture, guests were surrounded by saturated tones. Every little detail played into the look; the paper goods included bright colored napkins printed with fun facts about the bride and groom, and the koozies displayed a watercolor image of the family’s beach home.

The Flowers

“We had ALL the flowers!” says Sanders. Myrtie Blue worked magic with a huge variety of vivid blooms to create arches, swags, centerpieces and more. Peonies, anemones, ranunculus and roses were the stars of the show.

The Menu

Coordinated by Townsend Catering, the menu kept the coastal and colorful theme in play. Guests enjoyed an extensive charcuterie selection, a raw bar—kept cool by custom monogrammed ice sculptures from Ice Dragon—classic Southern food and build-your-own pasta. Mini desserts were just right to satisfy after-dinner sweet cravings. A vodka bar stocked with a variety of fresh fruit-infused spirits was the hub for the evening’s beverages.

The Entertainment

Local acoustic guitarist Jamah Terry provided music for the event. The Skudders wanted to give their guests an idea of the beach experience they love, so they included an element that has been essential to their family fun over the years in Rosemary—games. From bocce to jumbo versions of Jenga and Connect Four, attendees could test their skills for weekend bragging rights.

Thanks for Hopping by! An Easter Luncheon

Story & Event Design by Ginni Jones | Photography by Annabella Charles

the table

This table was a dream to create; from the bright and colorful flowers to the sweet spring china, it came together perfectly to celebrate the season! For the flower arrangements I layered baby blue delphinium, white snapdragons and lilac stock to create wonderful height at the center of the table. The dining room has tall, vaulted ceilings, so I wanted the flowers to match the grand scale of the room. To fill in the rest of the arrangement, I chose all my favorite spring flowers. Purple anemones, Menton French tulips, Dutch tulips, Queen Anne’s lace, craspedia, blush roses and baby blue and green hydrangeas were all intertwined to help create the backdrop of spring flowers.

On the table, I paired Herend China in my new favorite pattern, Queen Victoria in green, with a matching Herend Silk Ribbon charger. To add a bit more texture, I layed the plates on a fun woven placemat. Vintage linen napkins held my grandmother’s beautiful silver flatware. To brighten up the wood dining table I chose Estelle Colored Glasses—their newest champagne flutes come in some amazing colors. I went with the purple and paired them with the Aerin x Williams Sonoma white confetti glasses for water. I placed the menu for the luncheon on top of the china, wrapped in a slate blue silk ribbon. My talented friend Caroline Hughes wrote the menu on the same Dogwood Hill cards I used for the invitations. I wanted something fun and fresh, and Caroline’s handwriting was perfect for the menu!

Finishing the look were my go-to favorites, Dina lamps from White Door Events. The new taller lamps are perfect for long tables, so I scattered a few down the tablescape. The sage color was just right for the theme and the lamps gave off the perfect amount of light.

the menu

I know I say this every time, but the menu was so much fun to create! I wanted to include typical luncheon items punched up with seasonal goodies like deviled eggs, radishes and little gem lettuce, so we served Pimento Cheese and Cucumber Dill Tea Sandwiches, Chicken Salad Croissants, Beet Stained Deviled Eggs (so pretty and unique!), Little Gem Wedges with Avocado and Radishes, Green Goddess Potato Salad with Green Beans and Cucumbers, Bogie’s Pasta Salad (always a favorite), and a Seasonal Fruit Salad with a Honey Lime Glaze.  We put dessert in the very talented hands of Nuha Abuduhair at 17 Berkshire. She and I briefly discussed the theme for the luncheon and she immediately suggested her new petit fours adorned with buttercream radishes, carrots and flowers. They were adorable and delicious! As was the carrot cake decorated to match the petit fours—definitely a must try!

the decor

White Door Events had everything we wanted and more! From precious, new wicker chairs to a white market cart, it all fit the theme of the event to a T. In the dining room, we picked their new Weezy chairs for the head chairs and the Louis natural chairs for the sides of the table. Since the dining room is such a large space, I set White Door’s sage Felicia sofa on the other side of the table with a pair of Ramsey woven chairs with the lattice garden stool in between. The real show stoppers were the white dogwood trees in stunning aged iron planters. Outside in the atrium, the adorable white market cart held the drinks for the day in style. Next to the cart, a Weezy chair and a lattice garden stool paired with some sweet blue hydrangeas made the cutest vignette. Overhead, we hung White Door’s new Cambridge pendant. The linen drum shade was perfect for the event’s aesthetic and worked nicely with the chair and cart.

Celebrating Baby Hensley

Story & Event Design by Ginni Jones | Photography by Annabella Charles

the table

The head table, for family of baby Hensley, was decked with all things white, blue and green. The mother- to- be LOVES hydrangeas and chinoiserie jars, so decorating the table to celebrate her was a breeze! Starting with the base of the table, we picked a slate- blue velvet linen from White Door Events. The texture and weight of the velvet was perfect to keep the fall season apparent with the decor. Fresh white, blue and shamrock hydrangeas were tukced into various vintage ginger jars. Setting the table, these silver- leaf square placemats were the perfect base for the dinnerware--— found from our favorite local store, Lisa Mallory Interior Design. We also love Lisa Mallory for her vast collection of Estelle Colored Glasses, the perfect cobalt blue glasses for the table. A mixture of blue and white Herend china created the perfect combination of delicate and sophisticated for the table. Placecards calligraphied by ME Lettering were set in acrylic holders for each woman in baby Hensley's life. And, of course, the showstoppers, the custom hemstich linen embriodered napkins for the new mom! Embellished with an "H" for Hensley, we wanted to make sure the mom had something sweet to take home with her to remember her first baby shower, besides all the gifts for the baby boy! The napkins were designed and created by the incredibly talented Spyglass Lane Linens, a local embrioderer. And to break up all the blue and white on the table, I used sage tulip flutes from Sir Madam. All the colors worked together perfectly and flowed with the rest of the shower details.

the menu

the baby shower took place on a fall Sunday afternoon so we wanted to keep the food light, but still seasonal. Tomato soup paired with a grilled cheese bar, an apple, kale and pomegranate salad, fig and honey baked brie were just a few things our talented Aubrey Ann Monger made for the shower. For dessert, a divine white cake and an assortment of adorable mini pies were brought in from the wonderful Frost Bakery. An assortment of custom cookies made by Taylor Cookie Co. were also a hit— not only were they cute on the island, but they were a delicious treat!

the decor

With about 10 close friends as hosts for the shower we had the best time picking out all the decor for the event. Inside the house, a vintage bassinet was filled with ferns and ivy, and light blue pansies for the baby boy. Clear acrylic trays from White Door Events held glasses of prosecco and the assortment of mini trays. We lined the trays with the monogram from the linen napkins copied onto a sheet of paper to make them look even more special for the event. Spyglass Lane Linens also made sweet bibs for baby Jack which were sprinkled around the house in decor. The bibs were tucked into the bassinet and on the table to be part of the decor but also a gift for the baby!

thanks for popping by!

Guests were greeted with a fun and pastel colored balloon arch by the Pop of the Party, a local balloon stylist. The colors were based off wrapping paper and custom gift tags made by Fresh Ink in Oxford, MS. Upon leaving, guests could take baskets of popcorn with custom gift tags matching the invitation that said "thanks for popping by."

Celebrating the End of Summer

Story & Event Design by Ginni Jones | Photography by Annabella Charles

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and there’s no better way to celebrate the last bit of the season than with a fun lobster boil outside! We set the table with all of my favorites—Estelle Colored Glass stemware, Carthage.Co dinnerware and fun tortoise-shell flatware from Anthropologie—all set on the Provence table from White Door Events. This 10-foot white farm table paired with folding bamboo chairs beautifully and allowed all our guests to be seated together at the same table. And once the sun set, Dina lamps provided the warmest after-dinner glow.

Coming up with the menu was such a fun part of planning the dinner party! Inspired by Nantucket and a classic summer soiree in New England, I knew I had to have a lobster boil. Lobster, shrimp, potatoes, corn and lemons took center stage on the table. For sides and appetizers I turned to Mary Alexander Satterfield. I knew her genius recipes would complete the menu. She prepared prosciutto cantaloupe bites, dill cucumber sandwiches with smoked salmon, cheesy garlic smashed potatoes and summer pasta salad. I knew I wanted oysters on the half shell somewhere on the table, and one important component of dinner was still missing: dessert! So I called on my talented best friend, Caroline Robinson, to make hand-painted cookies that looked EXACTLY like raw oysters. To pair with all the delicious food, my summer go-to, French Blue Rose, as well as the label’s new sauvignon blanc, were crisp and refreshing.

Celebrating Spring

Spring-140.jpg

The Scene:  Since outdoor festivities are just now starting to happen again—how about lunch in the nursery at Millstone? Everyone needs a little fresh air these days so the nursery and greenhouse were the perfect location for this luncheon. Overflowing with green and blooming plants, it was a stunning backdrop to set the scene.

Spring-44-2.jpg
Spring-48.jpg

The Setting: The table was set with all the best. From a beautiful mix of hand-painted Herend china to pastel mint and blush martini glasses by Estelle Colored Glass, the table was nothing short of spring soiree ready! But the real star of the show was the centerpiece, the silver Milan three-tier display from White Door Events, filled with lush green and blooming plants in aged terra cotta pots from the nursery. Tricia Hunt, owner of Millstone Marketplace, even provided some of her fresh-cut tulips to top off the lush spring look. Above the centerpiece, Patra and Hera Pendants chandeliers from White Door brought the vignette to full scale, completing the feast for the eyes to go along with the delicious meal. The pendants added a beautiful mix of natural woven and aged metal materials. Not to be missed from the tablescape were White Door’s adorable Dina mini lamps—cordless yet powerful, providing enough light to highlight the table. Table linens and chairs were also sourced from White Door. The Faux Bois chairs provided the perfect touch of garden chic to sit in while being surrounded by the greenhouse plants.

In addition to the gorgeous table, a lovely lounge section gave guests a spot to relax while enjoying desserts. The light blue and corals of the Tristan sofa and Persimmon dot pillows were the perfect addition to all the green around the venue. White and ivory velvet Neely chairs, paired with teal dot pillows, gave the perfect vibrant pop, balancing out all the colors involved. And last, but certainly not least, the power of accent tables: no lounge section is complete without them. The gold Bali side tables and Berlin coffee table brought a much-needed metallic shine to the scene.

The Sweets: 17 Berkshire’s new spring menu was perfect for the lunch. The mix of all the springtime flavors owner Nuha Abuduhair creates is magic! To-die-for desserts included Lemon Lavender Entremet, layers of soft lemon cake with lavender creme, topped with a candied lemon wedge and a lavender macaron; Hummingbird Cake, sweet spice cake layered with cream cheese mousse with white chocolate ganache; the Grapefruit Rose Tart, a delicate grapefruit curd infused with a touch of rose water; the Rosie, rose water mousse with a tart raspberry center; Opera Cake, joconde soaked in espresso and layered with chocolate ganache and espresso buttercream; and finally, the Bavarian Eclair, a vanilla bean cream stuffed eclair, simple and delicious. For the dessert table, Laura Park Designs paper plates and cocktail napkins the brightest patterns added a fun accent. These new designer paper plates and matching napkins make any picnic more extravagant and beautiful.

The Style: After over a year without events & dressing to the nines, now every occasion calls for a fresh, new outfit - and this luncheon was no exception! Oak Hall was the perfect stop for all things Spring. Whether it was a flirty maxi dress or bright spring top, their women’s department was overflowing with an array of bright colorful options to start off Spring on the right foot. Also available at Oak Hall is the local handbag line J LOWERY, their new spring collection has just hit the shelves and is sure to be a sell out! All your favorite bags, in fresh pastel colors and textures - feathers were even spotted, how fun!

Welcoming a New Season of Entertaining

Styling & Story by Ginni Jones | Photography by Annabella Charles Photography

Smaller & more intimate, fresh & outdoor gatherings...

It's become our new norm. With a new year's arrival, it's time to welcome the new era of entertaining.

We were forced into it, but we've grown to love it and will never take it for granted.

Set the Table

The dinner party is back! Small, more intimate gatherings that were once our only option have become a new trend we have grown to love. This winter we dined to celebrate our dear friends behind the brand J. LOWERY, and the launch of their new card case collection!

Set the Table

Dinner was set al fresco in the courtyard. For the table I kept it simple, which was a nice change of pace from all the Christmas decor. I paired muted sage glazed dinner plates with light blue stoneware salad plates and glossy white French soup bowls. For pops of color, I used all the produce of the winter season: pomegranates, artichokes, persimmons and dried orange slices scattered down the table with delicate clear glass vases of fresh white scabiosa flowers. To top it off and complete the table, I chose my favorite "gems," Estelle Colored Glass wine glasses, as well as glass and gold champagne flutes, because we have lots to celebrate this new year!

Setting the Table for the Holidays!

Styling & Story by Ginni Jones | Photography by Annabella Charles

'Tis the season to set the table! This holiday season we have realized it's more important than ever to spend time with our loved ones. For my family, that means gathering around the table for a lovely meal.

Christmas-38.jpg
Christmas-24.jpg

Keeping with the theme of "nothing being normal" this year, I decided to create a colorful and bright tablescape rather than the traditional red and green holiday setting. My inspiration was sparked by these "Twelve Days of Christmas" dessert plates from Anthropologie. For many years I have loved the work of watercolor artist Inslee Fariss. I found her, of course, on Instagram, and have been following her right from the beginning. When she posted these plates as a part of her collaboration with Anthropologie back in the summer, I knew I wanted to plan my whole Christmas tablescape around them. They are the cutest plates—a new take on the traditional twelve days of Christmas—complete with six geese a-laying, apres ski style, and more. When the plates arrived in the mail, I found they were even better in person. The plates are scalloped with a hand-painted gold edge, perfectly matching the scalloped gold edges of Herend china.

So I was off to Social, our local Herend distributors, to pick out the color palette that would accompany my adorable new plates. We went with rust, raspberry, fern and turquoise to best accent the plates. My final decision was to use the "Silk Ribbon" chargers with the corresponding "Chinese Bouquet" dinner plates.

Since I had a bright color palette going with raspberry, turquoise, fern and rust, I called my sweet friend at Spyglass Lane for some custom cocktail napkins. We selected a classic "cheers" as well as "merry & bright" with Christmas lights in the four bright hues from the color palette.

For the rest of the table, I kept it simple. Beautiful white hemstitched linen napkins, antique silver flatware, and my great grandmother's champagne coupes, only used for special occasions (aka 2020)!

WEBAugust-29.jpg

Decking the halls

was super simple this year thanks to my favorite floral shop, Garden District. In addition to creating stunning floral arrangements year round, they are masters at decorating for the holidays.

Our table is long; 10 feet long, to be exact, so I fastened two strands of artificial pinecone garland from Garden District together to create the perfect centerpiece.    (TIP: I always add a few springs of fresh greens to the artificial garland to make it look even more realistic!) I tucked in gold candlesticks and the table was set.

On the sideboard, I love to mix and match clusters of bottle brush trees. Also sourced from Garden District, the silver trees paired nicely with the antique silver flatware on the table and the bright green trees, which also light up, were the perfect bright take on traditional Christmas green.

Christmas-107.jpg

Shop Local

If ever there was a time to shop locally, 2020 is it. We know this year has been rough for everyone, especially small business owners. This Christmas, even though it will be a small family get-together, we are still dressing as if we were having a big Christmas Eve party. I'll be cocktail party (I wish) ready in this Tish Cox navy taffeta Sheridan top from Oak Hall. And to complete the outfit, I’ll be sporting my favorite stack of Oak Hall Collection oxidized sterling silver and diamond bracelets.

Plan

your menu ahead of time. This year, make it a priority to outsource some items from local restaurants. In our house, we will be ordering the sweets from 17 Berkshire Bakery.

Nuha Abuduhair, the owner and baker at 17 Berkshire, plans the most creative holiday menus when it comes to the dessert department. For tarts, cakes, macarons, cupcakes and more, I highly suggest visiting her in Overton Square for your holiday treats.

wishing

you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas! May you fill this time with happy, healthy and wonderful memories as you spend the season with your quarantine crew. And may you finish 2020 on one special note!

see y'all next year!   xoxo, ginni jones

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays...the air is cool and the pressure of deadlines or finding the perfect gift doesn’t exist. It’s simply a gathering with your tribe, whether that consists of family or friends you call family. So when At Home mentioned styling a Thanksgiving table, especially after a year of quarantining and social distancing, I was ready and willing. To create the style I tried to stick with the concept of using what I had on hand first—a little hunting and gathering in my own home—and only filling in as needed. I always say if you only buy things you love, you can pull it all together when the time comes. That concept plays out beautifully when setting a table. I hope you enjoy this grouping of mostly vintage finds collected over a lifetime to tell a story in our home this Thanksgiving.

Since gathering in small groups has become the new norm, we decided to embrace the cooler temperatures and head outdoors for a small, intimate dinner party for four! This fall, I am loving all the earth tones. When I saw these stunning sage green splatter plates at The Avenue, I knew they would be the star of the table. Paired with terrcotta linen napkins, dark rose tumblers and a pale green textured runner, the colors blended together beautifully.

The House

My family is blessed to have been surrounded by amazing friends, or as we like to call them, "our chosen family." The Kakaleses are just that & we have shared countless memories in their greenhouse. Whether it's Cinco de Mayo, celebrating a birthday or friend's recent engagement, or just a wednesday happy hour, I have cherished every memory made with our "chosen" family in this charming greenhouse.

The Cocktail

The Eastside Rickey was found at the Wonderbird Spirits Distillery in Taylor, MS. Featuring their world-class gin, just add lime, cucumber & mint-it's a crisp & refresing beverage we will be sipping on all year round! Not only is Wonderbird's gin award winning, but it's fermented from Mississippi Delta rice-straight from grain to glass.

Hello, spring!

After what seems like quite the long winter sheltered indoors, spring is finally here! And there’s no better way to celebrate than to invite all your loved ones over for a fun spring brunch.

Set the Table

It was about time to bring some bright colors to the table, so as always, I turned to my favorite ladies at Social to get the most beautiful pieces in order to create the perfect tablescape for this brunch. I already owned a few pieces I wanted to mix in with my new goodies from Social. I love the blue wine glasses, hand blown in Poland, from Estelle Colored Glass. Estelle has every color imaginable and they are the perfect “gems” for a festive table. I found the white oblong platters on a recent trip to Nashville. They reminded me of Easter eggs, perfect to display appetizers.

For china, I picked out some gorgeous pieces from the vast Herend collection available at Social. We paired the Princess Victoria dinner plate with the Fishscale salad plate in light blue and the combination turned out stunning. Layered below was a textured bronze charger also from Social. For napkins, we kept it simple with a white linen fabric piped with a scallop edged. And lastly, I couldn't leave without these exquisite glass and gold dragonfly salt and pepper shakers. Yes, they are probably the smallest detail, but they are the perfect mix of modern and vintage that I was looking for as inspiration for this spring tablescape!

What’s for Brunch?

Picking out the menu is always one of my favorite parts of hosting. I really wanted to highlight the season, so I tried to incorporate as much spring produce as possible. Also, since the menu featured brunch, I wanted to keep the food light and fresh. I love mixing mini bite snacks and platters, so I made two crostinis and a colorful crudite platter. The spring pea crostini, perfectly toasted bread layered with pea and basil pesto, fresh burrata cheese and prosciutto, was definitely a crowd favorite. The second crostini was an edamame and radish version, made with an edamame, mint and ricotta cheese—so fun and easy to create! Simply chop up fresh veggies like carrots, cucumbers, broccolini, spring peas and radishes and layer them around dips. Here I used a spicy avocado hummus and a tomato basil hummus. Don’t forget to add fresh pita slices (they’re even better toasted).

The Flowers

You can’t welcome spring without fresh flowers! Coral and orange ranunculus paired together are always stunning. Add a bit of wax flower and tuck them into glass mini globe vases, and they add the perfect pop of color scattered around the table.

Create Your Own

I can’t take all the credit for creating this fun and seasonal tablescape; I will be the first to admit I learned everything from my mom! She has been entertaining ever since I can remember. Whether it was a simple birthday dinner with our immediate family or our annual Christmas Eve Soups & Sips party for a crowd, she hosts every holiday with style and grace.

Here's what I have picked up from Lili Jones over the years:

First, keep it simple. Don’t try to make something extravagant and then get frustrated when something doesn’t turn out exactly the way you wanted it. It’s important to not stress yourself out; you want to be present at your gathering and enjoy the time with your loved ones!

Two, never forget to add something fresh! Whether it’s fresh flowers on the table or greenery from the yard placed in a vase—or even springs of herbs tucked under food on a platter—you always need a fresh element.

Thirdly, my mom is always reminding me to use what I have. I am constantly looking for new decor, but I’ve learned to mix with what I have before I buy new. If you do buy more, shop locally.

And lastly, don’t forget the music. For our family, it is most likely Dave Matthews playing (quite loudly) over the speakers around the house. And we can’t forget how when we all gather in the kitchen and grab hands to pray; without fail, every time she sings “The more we are together, together, together…”. Whatever you prefer, just don’t forget the music!

Enchanted Garden Party

For my granddaughter Chloe’s ninth birthday and I knew the celebration had to be something girly, sparkly and magical. Even at nine years old, Chloe has a love for charming settings, vintage decor and Jane Austin movies, like her grandmother. We set up on the grounds of Annesdale Mansion by our favorite old tree. There couldn't have been a more perfect location.

The young guests were transported to an enchanted atmosphere from the moment they arrived.

As soon as the guests arrived they were wowed by Disney princess dress-up ball gowns hanging from the tree. Each girl got to pick the one she wanted to wear for the party, along with matching jewelry. Chloe, the guest of honor, wore a “Let Them Eat Cake” birthday crown.

We set a beautiful table for a garden tea party with a forest green linen cloth covered in green fabric petals. Each place setting had a pink fabric bag filled with party favors. We kept it simple but colorful with flowers in a vintage silver container. Everyone got a vintage tea cup, saucer and animal plate. The table was decorated with teapots and Chloe’s collection of bunnies.

The girls played Pin the Top on the Teapot and Guess How Many Jellybeans Are in the Teapot, and they decorated butterfly sugar cookies.

In true garden party fashion, the menu included scones with lemon curd. Other refreshments included flower-shaped peanut butter and jelly tea sandwiches, mini hot dogs, fruit cups, veggie cups, apple juice, fruit tea and a beautiful floral birthday cake expertly decorated by The Flour Garden.

Winter Wonderland Party

What could be better than a beautiful birthday dinner for a beautiful friend with a pretty table and delicious food? Not much if you ask me! Recently, I hosted one of these dinners for our sweet friend, Singer/Songwriter Kelly Lang. From my table to the food I wanted everything to be perfect and that included the guest list! Laughter flowed all evening with stories from Kelly’s husband, Country Music Legend TG Sheppard, along with Priscilla Presley, Jack and Leighanne Soden, Pat Kerr Trigrett, Dr. Jonathan Ellichman and his wife Nicole, Dianne Norton, and Robert Walden.

Guests arrived around 7:00pm and were escorted back to the bar to start the party off with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.  About an hour into the party I asked guests to follow me to the dining room to be seated for dinner! With it being winter and pretty chill here in Tennessee I wanted my table to reflect that. I decided on a Winter Wonderland themed table with tall crystal trees, flocked evergreen, and touches of soft purples to bring in a little color. One of my favorite touches of the evening were the menu cards I made for each guest. Easy to make and definitely beautiful, I purchased the glitter card stock at a local craft store and cut it to the desired size. I printed the menu on a pearlized paper, cut it a tad smaller that the glittered piece and glue it on top. To finish, I attached elegant snowflake stickers to add color and depth. Time consuming? A little. But well worth it as every lady at the table asked if they could take theirs home.

To start the evening I served a guest favorite, my Filet of Halibut atop Cream Cheese Grits with Country Ham topped with Wild Mushroom Marsala Broth. One of the guests, who has eaten at restaurants around the world, said he had never had a better halibut course. Next, I served a delicious Mixed Greens Salad with Granny Smith Apples, Dried Cranberries, Red Onion, Candied Pecans, and Goat Cheese topped with my homemade Sweet Blush Vinaigrette. For the entree I made Prosciutto and Sage Wrapped Pork Tenderlion with Buttered Shallots, Creamy Mushroom Risotto, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Applewood Smoked Bacon. Needless to say, I don’t like for my guests to go home hungry!

Dessert was the showstopper for me! For the birthday girl I didn’t want to do anything expected. So, instead of a traditional birthday cake I had a little fun! I made each guest a hollow white chocolate ball, about four inches in diameter, and embellished it with edible flowers I dusted in pink and yellow edible dusting powder. To top them off I used melted white chocolate as glue and attached beautiful dragonflies made of edible wafer paper...the birthday girl loves dragonflies. Hidden under each embellished ball I placed a tower of decadent carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Once a dessert had been placed in front of each guest I circled the table with my hot butterscotch glaze, pouring a liberal amount over each ball causing them to melt and reveal the hidden dessert beneath.

We finished the evening with a delicious port to accompany the dessert as Kelly opened her birthday gifts. It was the perfect evening and I think everyone had a wonderful time. Especially me as I love nothing more than having guests around my dining table.

50 & Fabulous Soiree

Written by Angela Mazanti | Photography by Jamie Sue Johnston

Opening Spread.jpg

Jennifer's husband, Frank, contacted me to plan a surprise birthday party for her 50th. He decided early in the planning process that he was going to need her input on some things and let her in on the secret, but wanted to leave as many details as possible as a surprise.

Set the stage.

The setting for the party was at their beautiful, historic home. Jennifer recently took her daughter on a graduation trip to France, and I was inspired by that, as well as the English Tudor-style home. She has a love of antiques, beautiful French colors and patterns. I used those things as inspiration for the decor that included watercolor linens in greens, blues and yellows that mimicked the tones in a Monet painting.

The Decor:

The flowers looked as though they were hand gathered from an English garden. Jennifer’s favorite color is yellow, so I incorporated it with French blue for the flowers, cake, linens, invitations, etc. I enlisted the help of Lindsey Cross at Mrs. Post Stationery to help pull together the perfect invitation.

The Menu:

The cake was designed by The Flour Garden and was a mixture of chocolate and yellow butter cake with toasted Pecan Bavarian filling. The menu was artfully presented by Wade & Company Catering. It consisted of a fresh fruit and cheese display, bacon-wrapped artichokes with parmesan parsley dust, honey smoked salmon with candied citrus zest and sun dried fruit, Mediterranean chicken salad baguettes, beef tenderloin sliders, asparagus and peppers with lemon aioli, warm New Orleans crab dip, summer orzo salad and apricot-glazed chicken kabobs.

Special Details:

Jennifer and her guests enjoyed dancing under the stars to the Memphis Allstars Band. In lieu of gifts, she requested that donations be made to Southern Reins in honor of a special friend.

Host Your Own:

If you want to throw your own party for someone special, whether you go for a surprise or not, try to make sure all of the details are inspired by the guest of honor. Use their favorite colors, flowers, food and music to create an atmosphere that truly reflects who they are and your guests will leave feeling like they were at an experience that was unique and inspired.
